Your Slice of Paradise

Close your eyes and imagine waking to the sound of waves rolling onto golden sand, the morning sun painting the ocean in shades of amber and rose. You step outside with your coffee, barefoot on the deck, and breathe in air so crisp and salty it feels like a cleanse for your soul. This isn’t a dream – this is your morning at Potato Point, one of the South Coast’s most exclusive and peaceful retreats.

Nestled in this intimate coastal village are two stunning beaches: Potato Beach to the north and Jemison’s Beach to the south. Each has its own personality, its own mood, but both share that same untouched beauty that makes you feel like you’ve discovered a secret the rest of the world hasn’t found yet.

Two Beaches, Endless Possibilities

Potato Beach on the northern side is slightly more sheltered, locally celebrated for good surfing breaks and excellent beach fishing – especially if you’re after salmon and bream. Picture yourself with a book in one hand, toes buried in warm sand, the rhythmic crash of waves providing the perfect soundtrack to your afternoon. The beach stretches long and wide, with soft, golden sand that invites lazy strolls at sunrise or sunset.

To the south lies Jemison’s Beach, more exposed to the wild weather and dramatic seas, perfect for those who love nature’s raw power. When the wind picks up and the waves crash against the shore, this beach becomes a theatre of elemental forces. Yet on calm days, it transforms into a peaceful sanctuary where you might spot a beautiful coastal bushland backdrop framing your ocean views.

The beauty of these beaches? Even during peak season, they’re so long and expansive that finding your own quiet corner is never a challenge. Most of the year, you’ll have stretches of sand almost entirely to yourself – just you, the ocean, and perhaps a few seabirds for company.

When Giants Pass By

Between September and November, something magical happens here. Thousands of humpback whales make their southern migration along the NSW coastline, and Potato Point offers one of the best land-based vantage points to witness this spectacle. During their southern journey, these gentle giants move slowly, venturing so close to shore you can sometimes hear their breath as they exhale.

Female whales and their newborn calves can sometimes be spotted cruising just beyond the breakers. It’s a symbol of hope and resilience that will leave you speechless.

And the whales aren’t alone. Dolphins are frequently sighted in these waters year-round, their playful fins cutting through the surf as they hunt or simply play in the waves.

Walking to Where Rivers Meet the Sea

For those who love to explore on foot, a stunning beach walk stretches from Potato Point to the Tuross River Inlet. There’s also a beautiful 14-kilometer coastal walk from Potato Point to Dalmeny via Lake Brou, taking between 4-5 hours return. This medium-grade walk takes you through varying scenery including coastal views, forest, and wetlands, all while treating you to that magnificent Pacific Ocean backdrop.

The paths wind through the beautiful coastal bushland of Eurobodalla National Park, where every turn reveals another breathtaking vista. Whether you tackle the full walk or simply stroll along the shoreline, you’ll understand why this coastline has remained so pristine.

Wildlife Wonderland

One of Potato Point’s most delightful surprises? The abundance of wildlife that calls this area home, including numerous kangaroos who graze peacefully around the area. You’re likely to encounter wallabies and even emus during your stay – yes, emus! These remarkable birds were introduced to nearby Horse Island at the mouth of the Tuross River and have since made the mainland their home, creating one of the most unique wildlife experiences on the South Coast.

Watch as Eastern Grey kangaroos arrive for their evening graze, hopping casually across the landscape as the sun sets in brilliant oranges and pinks. Emus might stroll past without a care in the world, their prehistoric presence adding to the area’s wild charm.

Important: While these encounters are magical, please observe all wildlife from a safe distance. Never approach, feed, or attempt to touch kangaroos, emus, or any other animals. These are wild creatures, and respecting their space ensures both your safety and theirs.

Sunrises and Sunsets That Stop Time

The sunrises here are spectacular – imagine walking onto the beach as the first light breaks over the Pacific, the sky transforming from deep purple to soft pink to blazing gold. The world feels brand new in these moments.

And the sunsets? Kicking back with friends or family watching the sun sink into the horizon is what South Coast evenings are made for. The sky becomes an artist’s canvas, painting clouds in shades you didn’t know existed, while the ocean reflects every color back at you.

The Quiet You’ve Been Searching For

What makes Potato Point truly special isn’t just what’s here – it’s also what’s not. There’s no traffic noise, no crowds, no hustle. With a village population of less than 180 people, this is a place where you can genuinely disconnect and breathe.

Most of the year, you’ll have these spectacular beaches largely to yourself. Even during the busy summer holidays, the expansive shorelines mean you can always find solitude. This is the kind of place where you measure time by tides, not clocks. Where the biggest decision of your day is which beach to visit, which book to read, whether to walk north or south.

From your modern, newly renovated retreat, everything you need is right here: the beach a short stroll away, sunrise and sunset views that never get old, and that precious commodity you came here for – peace. True, deep, soul-restoring peace.

Pack light. Bring your favorite book, your sense of adventure, and an open heart. Potato Point is waiting to show you what real coastal living feels like.

Welcome to paradise. Welcome home.

While Potato Point is paradise, it’s important to stay safe during your visit:

  • If caught in a rip current, stay calm, float to conserve energy, and raise your arm to signal for help.

  • Be aware of waves and slippery surfaces on rock platforms.

Wildlife Safety:

  • Observe all wildlife from a safe distance. Never approach, feed, or attempt to touch kangaroos, emus, or any other animals.
  • These are wild creatures; approaching them can be dangerous for both you and the animals.

WP Rentals can benefit both hosts and travelers. Hosts get to meet people from around the world while making a little extra money, and travelers can often stay for less than the cost of a hotel room. In addition, many travelers enjoy accommodations that offer a different experience from standard hotels.

In the past, these types of services have been used largely by thrifty tourists looking for the cheapest place they can find in a particular city. Now, however, more and more business travelers and professionals are looking to WP Rentals for a unique and memorable experience.
